The motivation behind creating the Granular Synthesizing Talk-box (GST) is to provide a more straightforward and efficient tool for talk-box users. It aims to eliminate the complex setup typically required with traditional talk-boxes, which involve a keyboard synthesizer and an external amplifier. The GST simplifies this process significantly, offering a plug-and-play solution that enhances ease of use and performance flexibility.

Granular synthesis is a method that involves sampling sounds defined in a microsecond span, which we call a 'Grain', and layering multiple grains into a single group to achieve a robust texture of generated sound.

The motivation to create the ‘Granular Synthesizing Talk-box (GST, in short)’ is solely an attempt to manufacture a better straightforward tool for talk-box users. Usually in practice, the talk-box requires a sound source, which is a keyboard synthesizer in general, and an external amplifying unit to add more power to the talk-box. In this scenario, the performer must prepare the same setup for every performance that involves such a tool to function.

However, the newly developed GST eliminates all of the laborious procedures described above by a simple plug-and-play action. By sampling signals inputted to the photoresistor installed in the middle of the device, a processed signal is amplified through a mono amplifier module and sent to a high-output speaker. After the loud volume that has been spread out is focused by passing through a tightly sealed funnel, pre-installed using adhesives.

This travels through a meter-long air pipe and finally reaches the user’s vocal cavity. The pressurized waves of sound add a unique quality to the user’s voice as he or she shapes their mouth. For clarity to listeners away from the stage, it is recommended to use an extra microphone near the user as the sound is exhaled from the mouth.

Not only reducing the hard work, sound-wise the GST is an improvement over the conventional method in many other ways. While keyboards and other devices can output exclusively following the discrete manner of the ’12 Equal Tone Temperament’, GST provides a linear spectrum of tonality allowing the player to access a whole new dimension of tonal possibilities.

Though it is not currently planned, future development expects a much lighter and aesthetically appealing version of the GST for a better user experience.
